Working with limited capacity.
The main idea, followed by what to clarify.
- 01
Hold information while using it
Working memory temporarily holds information and supports processing. Mental arithmetic requires keeping intermediate numbers in mind while calculating.
- 02
Watch the competing demands
The task and unnecessary distractions both draw on limited capacity. Check the instructor’s examples to see which distractions they emphasized.
- 03
Group what is already familiar
Chunking organizes familiar elements using prior knowledge. It does not remove the capacity limit. Extra illustration: a familiar abbreviation may be easier to hold than unrelated letters.
WHAT IS MISSING?Can these notes replace the lecture?
No. These slides omit the instructor’s explanation and any classroom examples. Add your own lecture notes and check the original diagrams before treating the summary as complete.
