Demand and quantity demanded

Quantity demanded is the amount buyers are willing and able to buy at a particular price. A change in the good’s own price moves a buyer along a demand curve, holding other factors constant.

Demand describes the relationship between prices and quantities. Changes in income, preferences, or the prices of related goods can shift the curve. For a normal good, higher income increases demand.

Movement or shift?

Two similar phrases describe different changes.

  1. 01

    Quantity demanded → a point

The amount buyers would purchase at one price. A change in the good’s own price means movement along the curve, other things equal.

  2. 02

    Demand → the relationship

Income, preferences, or related prices can shift the curve. More income increases demand for a normal good; that qualification matters.

  3. 03

    An extra example to check

A coffee price cut changes quantity demanded. A change in buyers’ preferences for coffee can change demand. This example illustrates the distinction; it is not a quote from the excerpt.

CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDINGWhat would you label a change in the good’s own price?

A movement along the demand curve, holding other factors constant. The curve itself does not shift just because the good’s own price changes.

MAKE ONE LESSON EASIER TO REVISIT

A little structure goes a long way.

1. Bring the source

Add a reading, your class notes, or a document to a Dolphin conversation. Name the section you want to understand.

2. Choose the detail

Ask for a short outline or a fuller explanation. Keep technical terms and exceptions that your course depends on.

3. Explain it back

Close the notes and try describing the main ideas. Reopen the source to check what you missed, then ask Pip a focused follow-up.

Make organized study notes from the material I attached. Use headings, key definitions, and short explanations. Keep important qualifications and examples. Separate information from the source from any additional explanation, flag uncertainty, and finish with three questions I should be able to answer.

A FEW THINGS TO KNOW

Making notes with Dolphin.

How do I generate study notes with AI?

Sign in to Dolphin, attach your course material or paste an excerpt, and ask Pip to organize it into notes. Specify the topic, the level of detail, and any terms your instructor emphasizes. Compare the result with the original before studying it.

What is the difference between study notes and a study guide?

Study notes explain and organize the material from a lesson or reading. A study guide helps you plan a broader review, often combining topics, practice questions, and a checklist. Start with notes when you need to understand one source; use a study guide when you are preparing across several lessons.

Can I make notes from a PDF or PowerPoint?

Yes. Dolphin accepts PDF and PowerPoint files in study conversations. A readable text-based document works best. For slides, ask Pip to preserve the order and explain short bullet points. Check diagrams and formulas against the original.

Can I choose the note format?

Ask for an outline, definitions with examples, a comparison, or Cornell-style cues and notes. You can ask follow-up questions to expand an explanation or shorten a section.

Are these notes guaranteed to match my course?

No. AI may omit details or misread material. Ask it to flag uncertainty and distinguish the source from extra explanation, then verify names, numbers, equations, and examples. Your instructor’s material remains the reference.
