SAT prep comparison

Dolphin SAT vs Magoosh

Magoosh offers lessons, practice questions, explanations, and mobile study, not just a course to watch. Dolphin SAT offers a free iOS starting point and a separate web practice and missed-question review workflow. Choose the routine you will use, then keep official Bluebook tests in your plan.

Quick answer

Should you choose Dolphin SAT or Magoosh?

Consider Magoosh if you want a lesson-led prep plan alongside practice and explanations. Consider Dolphin if you want daily questions and a way to return to your missed Dolphin questions. Neither is the only option for targeted practice, and neither guarantees a score increase. Try the relevant workflow before paying for another subscription.

How to decide

Step 1

Is Magoosh only for watching SAT lessons?

No. Its lessons sit alongside practice, explanations, and progress feedback. Watching a lesson is only one part of studying: answer a fresh question without notes, explain your reasoning, and revisit the error later. Before choosing either tool, check whether its explanations help you change how you solve a problem, not just recognize the answer.

Step 2

Which option fits short daily practice?

Both offer mobile study, so a phone app alone is not a reason to switch. Dolphin has a free iOS companion app; its web offering adds paid practice tests and review tools. Compare the actual session you need: answering a few questions, studying a lesson, or retrying mistakes. If your existing routine already works, another subscription may add little.

Step 3

Do either provider's tests replace official Bluebook practice?

No. Use College Board's Bluebook app for official full-length digital SAT practice. A provider's question pool and score feedback are separate from official tests. Use practice results to identify what needs work, but do not treat a predicted or practice score as a promised test-day result. Save time after each test to understand mistakes before taking another.

Step 4

How should you compare the tools before paying?

Pick one study problem, such as skipping practice or repeating the same type of error. Try one session and one review session, then check whether you can explain and solve a fresh question. Compare current access, device support, and cancellation terms on the provider's plan page. Keep your error notes across tools; do not assume that scores or progress sync between them.

FAQ

Can you use Magoosh for SAT practice on a phone?

Yes. Magoosh describes mobile access to lessons and practice as well as a flashcard app. Check the current access terms for the app and plan you intend to use. Dolphin also offers a free iOS companion app.

Are Magoosh practice tests official College Board tests?

No. Magoosh says its timed tests use its own question pool. Use Bluebook for official full-length digital SAT practice; Dolphin Web tests are also separate from Bluebook.

Do you need both Dolphin SAT and Magoosh?

No. Choose a primary routine and add another tool only for a specific gap. Neither paid subscription is required for SAT preparation: free official Bluebook tests and Khan Academy lessons can also be part of your plan.
