Reading and Writing FAQ

Choose the right SAT English practice

What do SAT Reading and Writing practice questions look like?

The current SAT uses a short passage or a pair of passages followed by one multiple-choice question. Both Reading and Writing modules mix four domains: Information and Ideas, Craft and Structure, Expression of Ideas, and Standard English Conventions. Practice reading meaning and editing sentences, not grammar alone.

What should I practice for Craft and Structure?

Start with words in context, text structure and purpose, and cross-text connections. Decide what a word means in its passage, what a sentence contributes to the text, or how two authors would respond to each other. A memorized definition alone may not fit the context.

How is Expression of Ideas different from Craft and Structure?

Expression of Ideas asks you to improve how a text communicates. Focus on transitions and rhetorical synthesis: connect ideas logically or select information from notes to meet a stated goal. Craft and Structure instead asks you to interpret language, text purpose, and relationships between texts.

Which skills help with SAT punctuation and grammar questions?

Use sentence boundaries, semicolons and colons, subject-verb agreement, and verb tense practice. For punctuation, identify complete clauses before choosing a mark. For grammar, identify the subject and the sentence meaning before comparing the choices. These questions fall within Standard English Conventions.

Where can I find official questions and a full Reading and Writing practice test?

Use College Board's Student Question Bank for official questions filtered by section, domain, skill, and difficulty. For a timed, scored full-length SAT, use Bluebook practice rather than treating a skill drill as a test. Bluebook's short test preview is untimed and does not provide scores or answer feedback.
